I have a '72 Johnson 85ESL 72R Hydroelectric. What does the R mean. I saw a lower unit for sale that is a 65ESL 72S. I believe the lower unit is the same HP wise for 50-125hp so evrything looks good but the R vs.S. Anyone have any info? Thanks

ALL of the 65ESL72 are "S"
ALL of the 85ESL72 are "R"
So don't get hung up on that.

BUT who told you the 65 - 85 use the same gearcase? That isn't what Evinrude says.

I have a Clymer Manual for 1.5-125hp. '56-'72. For the gear case section, they have 50-125 hp lumped together for things like gear case removal, water pump repacement etc so I assumed they were interchangable. Are you saying I can only use one from another 85hp?
