I just picked up a johnson 150, its a counter rotating prop, I've looked at the references online but can't figure out the yr.

Inside the cowl the ignition cover states Optical Ignition 2000.
But I don't think its a 2000.

Model number is M J150 w C L R S

according to the codes that makes it a 1940 !
they were way ahead of their time.?

I also can't find reference for the M in the model number,
there is no M in the charts.

Can anyone figure it out? my brain hurts.

jonesg,

check your model number again there should be another letter between the L and the R. 5 gets you ten that it is an E and that would make it a 1994

That's a 1994 150 commercial motor. Commercial motors didn't really go by model years but that's why the E was left out.

Is the concensus good on these types?
Its loop chraged...

just trying to learn what I can about it.
What makes it "commercial" ?

I've tried looking up the OEM manual here on Iboats but came up blank, would another similar J150 be the same manual ?

Good motor, probably one of, if not the best design OMC had. The commercial version is very similar to a recreational motor. The heads may have slightly more cc's, the rev limiter may be lower but the powerhead (block, crank, rods & pistons) are the same as the recreational motor. It may have a slightly different gear ratio, you'd have to check. Obviously some styling differences.
