When I built this computer, I tried to get the best of everything I could aford at the time, US Robotics was the Modem of choice then. Dial up. Noticed things seemed to be slowing down just a bit, Kicking me off the internet once in awhile, never really thought much about it though. Well, tonight, my Email program couldnt find my modem. I happened to have a new whatever it is lying around so I exchanged them, took out the old program and driver, installed the new, and walla, Here I am again. Cleaned out the computer while I was at it, Man, I should be ashamed, the dust bunnies almost ran over me when I opened the case. Wonder what that would have cost me if I would not have been able to do it myself. Had to think about it though, been awhile sense I been in this one.

Re: Modem dies!

See LubeDude. It does pay to be a jack of all trades. For myself, I think that I live one caste up from where my income has been these past years. Every time I repair something I think of the poor soul who has to pay someone to fix it or go out and buy new.

Another benefit of fixing it yourself, is that I have never hesitated to buy a tool to do the job. More often then not, you can buy the tool, do the job and still be way under what it would of cost to have the job done or buy new.

End result is that I have enough tools to do as much as time allows. So the next repair is even cheaper.

My fear is that when I'm no longer able to use them, there will be no one to use the wealth of tools that I have accumulated. Todate, my 17.5 y/o has shown no inclination to work with his hands. Even though my vocations have been cerebral, I've gotten imense satisfaction and relaxation working with things.

Re: Modem dies!

I know what you mean about the jack of all trades thing. I hate with a passion to have to have "ANYONE" touch anything of mine, I "ALWAYS" get took some way or the other. I would be the worst person in the world to build a house for, and someday thats probably going to happen. I will do the General contracting. but I can guarantee you that I will not be happy with something on every aspect of the project. I almost killed the guy that I bought my Mobile home from before it was completed.

Re: Modem dies!

I dont think that the original modem died, I found that I had picked up the old NetSky Virus. I let my updates go without updating and paying my dues, and I got hit with the stupid thing again, I had it last year. That will teach me to keep updated.
