Mods - what about a registered user buy/sell/trade forum

Would be ideal for users to help each other out. There must be a vast collection of used and hard to find parts just looking for a new home.

I know that here in Canada (Ontario at least) it is very difficult to locate used parts. Can't always afford new, and the environmentally friendly thing to do is to re-use.

What do you say? I know I've got a growing collection.

Do you not remember the "Thrifties" that fell flat on its face, at some considerable cost to iboats?

How about the five or six requests since then?

Our rule against soliciting to buy, sell or beg covers posts in the fora. A little creative thinking has produced the following system that works very well:

Joe posts: I need a bifurcated widget for a 1889 Benz Trike. Any ideas where I can find one?

Bill PMs Joe: Something private that is not affected by our rules as long as it does not offend Joe.

Some sort of private transaction is arranged. Joe is happy, Bill is happy and no rules have been broken.

Funny, I don't recall the Thrifty feature at all. My memory is great but really short if you know what I mean.

Was the PM system put in place after the thrifties feature was shut down or was it always here?

JB's example of 'Joe' could be taken as soliciting could it not?

Guess ebay will be the best place still to buy and sell.

I see nothing wrong with a classified section for registered users. A few simple rules could apply such as no commercial advertising. Those posting items have to be contributing members to the site, such as a minimum number of post under your belt before you can sell. Items being sold must not link to a site such as EBAY, Craigslist ect. I dont see how I boats could loose money with a simple set up like that. And the moderation should be a piece of cake. Nothing gets by you guys.

that's funny. The other forum that I mod on has a buy/sell/trade section, and it doesn't cost us a dime. Another mountain out of a mole hill, I suppose.

Hey Mods.....
Is it possible to set up a "parts wanted" only thread?
It could possibly work spam free if it could be done in such a way that once a registered user posts to that thread, that his post is automatically locked and nobody but the user or a mod can edit or delete the post.

If it was done that way, a user makes a post, the thread is locked, and a million people cannot post a million messages on that particular post. It will keep the spam out. And it will force the private message system.

any thoughts?

How many of your local auto parts places allow you to set up a parts flea market in the parking lot, or better, the lobby?

Maybe we haven't heard all possible yabuts, but we have heard thousands.

The Thrifties were set up. They are still there. Nobody used them then, nobody uses them now.

Use the PM system. It is a little more difficult than an open forum, but it works.
