Monterrey steering

Hey folks anybody got some experience with power assisted steering? I am working on a boat with a 4.3 merc and an alpha outdrive. The boat is snaking back and forth at low speeds. Like there is wear in the steering. The helm has some wear, but the outdrive feels tight. (slight wear, but tight)
I am getting a new helm. Are there any checks I need to make at the tiller end other than checking it by hand?
