Hi I recently purchased a new motor, which I was told was a Chrysler, but when I inspected the motor, there was no indication of it being a Chrysler, just Montgomery Ward Sea king 55 hp.
Model # VWB 52055. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the year of this motor and also the point gapping. Thanks

Are you sure the number is 52055 and not 52056? 52056 would be a 1974 chrysler.

Ward's marketed the Sea King label but yes, it was manufactured by Chrysler Marine. The year can be determined by the serial #. Invert the first 2 digits--for example , I had a 1983 mod # VBW52119D Ser # 38x 28590. My old 1972 6hp motor had a serial number starting 27xhope this helps.

Yea I guess you were right eurolava cause ser # begins with 47x so I guess it's a 74, but what about the gapping of the points? I set it to .020 and it back fired indicating that the spark was going off too late. I was told you can adjust the timing slightly by adjusting the gaps. If that is the correct gap what else could be wrong? The orig owner said it was running then it just died. I checked for sparks, i checked compression, just dont no wat it could be. Thanks

Try reversing the plug wires. .020 is the correct gap

i dont think thats the problem, because i checked to see when the top spark plug sparked relative to the piston location. the piston was at TDC, so i dont no.

If points are gapped at .020 and you have the correct plugs my guess is the flywheel key is sheared. Use Champion L82C plugs. If you have access to the points you must have the flywheel off? Even slight tear in the key can throw the timing off. Mercury still sells flywheel keys for that motor. Part number is 28 -F92498. It is 6 dollars. Even though you have tested cylinder 1 firing at TDC it should fire slightly before TDC which could indicate the key is damaged.
