We have a Montgomery Ward Sea King 7hp, Clinton engines, model k7002107a, serial 640990, type 6027370r. When we take it out, it runs fine to start with and then gradually runs slower and slower until it's barely moving the boat even though we still have the throttle wide open, but it never dies. What are some things we can check that might be causing this? Thanks!

Re: Montgomery Ward 7HP Motor Problem

Welcome to Iboats,

your problem could be several things including crankcase seals and worn rings, but my first thought would be the fuel tank vent is closed or stopped up.
This is typical behavior especially with the bigger rigs, I have had dirt daubers build in my fuel vent on my big boat and I would make it about a mile at WOT and get the same symptom.

also make sure your points are clean and gaped correctly

Good reply from mrcrabs. 'Nother possible. Are you sure fuel/oil mix is correct? is water pump coolin' that motor enough? Either thing not working is of course BAD news. Just a thought.
