Montgomery ward sea king?

I just perchased a Montgomery ward sea king 5hp <br />its really in mint cond,but i can't seem to get it to run any tricks to help,also how to check ot see if it is getting spark?<br />model #GG8960A and ser# 75X677536 could anyone tell me the year and who made it any help would be great<br /><br />thank you

That's a 1957 model made by Gale. First thing I'd do is check spark and compression. You can get both these tools at most any auto parts store. Depending on when it was last run, you need to take it apart and clean all fuel passages as they get clogged with old gas. Run that beast on 24:1 TC-W3 2 stroke oil. Make sure your impeller is in good shape. Turn your mixture screws all the way in (lightly) and then back out about one and a half turns. That sould get you started. I am looking to purchase the exact same model. I plan to go check compression tonight. I was told it should be 75 or better. They say almost everything is available from NAPA auto parts. Plus I found this link on another post.<br /> http://www.laingsoutboards.com/

I am also in the process of rebuilding a 1951 Gale Sea King 5.0 hp. So far, I've replaced the entire ignition assembly, cleaned out the carb, and now that it runs, I have a few questions. Is there a best option between using 16:1 with traditional SAE30, and 24:1 with The TC W3 Synthetic stuff? I seem to be running s little off because I mixed synthetic at a 16:1. I think a fresh tank of gas will help the smoking. Also, as I took off the prop and the foot tonight to check the pump and look at my neutral clutch catch, I noticed the bottom of the balanced prong assembly that engages the spring seems to be bent. Is this normal? When I went to put the plates back on I got worried also about how you can't see straight up the intake hole: is it mean to be indirect, or did I put it back together wrong? One last question while I'm here: Is there supposed to be water coming out of the bottom of the steering mount when the engine is running? Any help appreciated, thanks.
