I am the happy new owner of a 1954-55 Montgomery Wards, Sea King 12 hp gg-9016a (Gale 12d11) that does not run.

I have read many of the FAQ threads and have already gotten many answers to many questions (i.e.-how to tune the carb needle adjustments, etc.). I want to thank the wise and weathered who have offered so much beautiful helpful knowledge and information. Thank you.

I believe that I will most likely need new coils for this engine, redo the carb and gear lube. I will most likely buy a manual as suggested. I have searched the web site and am not sure which parts to order.

1. best manual for the buck? any free downloads anywhere? I did find a "Outboard Motors Gale products division of outboard marine corp condensed service data" PDF that I downloaded and it is packed with valuable info, data and images.
2. Ignition system is tried and true for 50's to 70's (20 years) but I see no direct reference in parts to my motor. Which Evinrude or Johnson should I use to access all these parts; including coils, breakers and maybe condenser and other parts listed below; part numbers?
3. Which carb kit do I want; part number?
4. Impeller? part number?

Thank you ahead for all your help, info and knowledge.
:)

While not free there should be a Gale parts manual for your motor here at iboats,
not cheap but very helpful.
Numbers are omc numbers so your BRP dealer can look them up.You might look on ebay for any parts.I found coils, impeller and a prop for my 55 Gale 5hp Bucaneer. The vendors listed the comeplete applications for each of the parts I was looking for. Priced reasonably and most had a return policy.

Steelespike thank you for the reply,
I have found an owner guide for an Eaton's Viking 12d13v and it offers quite a bit of info. Carb and many parts are very similar.

I will explore your suggestions about ebay. I did find a place especially for MW motors...Discount Marine Parts. I would also like to buy here at iboat. I suppose I can always call and talk to someone at iboat who can confirm part numbers.

Who is BRP?

What is an appropriate cord to use for the starter cord? daim? and cord type?

Thank you again for your time and knowledge.

BRP is Bambardier Recreational Products They bought OMC ),Evinrude Johnson, some time ago.
They took over and perfected the direct injection 2 stroke outboard that is now The Evinrude Etec outboard.
local BRP dealer should be able to get your parts.I believe your motor uses the same coils as the
10,15,18,20,25 etc etc E/J of similar years. Also the same carb kit as the 10,15,18,20 hp of similar years. You can get most of those things right here at Iboats.
Unfortunately you will need to determine any part numbers you need by a factory parts manual whether Iboats or BRP after all the motor is 56 years old.If you have the numbers BRP can order stuff.
Common parts of the years I suggested should fit.You can look them up here using the years of the E/J motors I suggested.I'm pretty sure that some of the other coils with different numbers the only difference is the primary wires.
The 10hp and 15 hp E/J uses a 7/32 X 70" starter rope. You can probably get good smooth not twisted nylon rope at the hardware store.

Well Sean, I have to Thank You., you've saved me some work as I have also recently obtained what I thought was a 1958 Sea King 12 hp motor, but appears to be a '54- '55 based on the model number. Along with it I recieved a 1957, or '58 Sea King Cedar Strip Runabout in original condition (ie; not restored, but in fantastic condition) and the matching 1957 trailer. I have been a boater for decades, but must admit that this is my first wooden boat so any tips, tricks, and especially "things to be avoided" would be greatly appreciated from those who have experience with the care and maintenance of a wooden boat. If there is a suggested book regarding the C&M of a wooden boat, I'd apppreciate the title and authors name.

Thanks,

Tim

It has been my expericence that all or most J-rude 3hp -40hp, '52-'72 take the same exact coil, (Sierra) # 18-5181, the impeller could be # 18-3002, (J-Rude 10hp-15hp), carb kit could be # 18-7043. I didn't get the # for points & condenser, but they should be all the same from '52-'72 also, good luck.

If the bottom paint is in good condition you can put it in the water to swell up.
It will likely take on an amazing amount of water so be prepared to bail or
or leave partially in the water on the trailer to soak up.Within an hour or so you will notice
less water coming in.Sometimes people put some water in the boat on the trailer don't overload
and be sure it doesn't get stern heavy and flip up.
as far as varnish goes a cover or covered slip is a must unless you dry sail and keep it in the garage.
Varnish will hold up many years with a well vented cover or maybe one of those portable garages to store it in.
My last boat the varnish was still good after 20+ years with always covered and in the boathouse. Though it could have used a fresh coat to really look good.Dry indoor winter storage is a must for long life of the finish.I had a loose fitted cover on mine anytime it wasn't likely to be going out that day.
