Mooring/Towing cover...the one item I didn't get with the boat...

Hi all,

Now for a new round of questions since my name is now on the title of the 2001 Stingray 200LS (oh what have I done:facepalm:)

The boat has bow and cockpit covers. A good (now great) friend is letting me use his concrete floor barn for the remainder of the winter, but after a few months time it will be stored outside for the spring and summer. For now, let's take that as a given even though I'll be trying to find reasonable indoor storage.

Soooo...I see here that I'm gonna pay call it $600 for a 'custom' cover (I guess meaning 'designed for my make/model boat,' which ain't really 'custom' in my book)...or, according to a respected Dayton Ohio boat cover maker guy, $1200 for a true custom, made-for-my-specific-boat-with-my-choice-of snaps, ties, etc. cover (this would be Sunbrella).

Sooo...other threads have told me I would be wise to tow the 45min - 2hrs to the nearby lakes with just the bow and cockpit covers, leaving the mooring/storage/trailer cover at home to avoid beating the cover up and having the straps slap the gelcoat. I'm OK with that. Seems sensible.

I guess my questions are...is a true custom $1200 worth the extra $600 over the offerings on this site? And as a follow up, is the $600ish a reasonable deal, or are the $400 as good (I know, I'll get what I pay for)? Or do I find another custom maker?

I really think the big cover will be more for static storage than towing...

Thoughts please, thanks,

Ron

On second thought, there are tons of threads on boat covers covering exactly my points above. I didn't do enough research before posting (trying to get it done as I wrapped up my day at work before heading home). So, don't waste your time...let me do more homework...I can't delete this post or I would.

Read some and then come back. That will help you ask better questions and understand the answers a lot better. :D

Read all the threads but yes a true custom cover is the best way to go. $1200 almost seems cheap. My custom cover in 1989 cost $1200. It still fits the boat perfectly in 2013. (My boat sits inside when not in use). My cover doesn't leak, doesnt flap or even move in the wind at highway speed and if it does get rained on it doesn't pool water.

just got a cover from boatcoversdirect
I chose the carver Poly guard
had to get a 30 ft. cover because I have a ESP and a windlass
paid around 600
it is semi custom but fits very well
I towed with it on and no problems

very happy
