I,m somewhat Computer literat but know nothing about Wi-Fi. If I get a Wi-Fi board for my home computer and it picks up a signal, do I need a special program to take advantage of it?

Nope. Whatever wireless adapter you purchase will come with the software required to connect to wireless networks. Windows XP and Vista come with software already called "Windows Zero Wireless Configuration Utility" which I like better than any of the other utilities.

Yes and no.

For you to use that wifi card properly you need to install a wireless router or switch at your home. Set it up depending on your provider, secure it with a WPA encryption, the highest yous system has and use a strong password.

You can pick your neighbor signal, if they have a wireless system and if they dont have it secure you can use their internet service. However, that is illegal in many placess and plain old said, is stealing. Im sure that is not your intended use.

Hope this help.
