Re: More GPS headaches

Hey Bruce, there are some people who are directionally challenged! My Mom was one of those people ... she could get lost on a route that she had been on many times ... very smart woman with lots of common sense, just not direction-sense. I know a few other people like that also, and it is so foreign to me because I like to figure out directions and go different routes so I learn all the roads in any area. When we go on vacation I will look at a map for a while, really studying the layout of the area and understanding the direction of a few of the roads. By the end of the week I can know the area as well as many of the locals (I know that isn't saying much).

Anyway, all that to say, there are people I know who are very dependent on GPS for their every move. Before GPS they were lost A LOT! Now, every destination goes into the GPS. I think they need the GPS to get out of their own driveway!

Re: More GPS headaches

I do sometimes use a GPS for a route I do often to figure out the time its going to take but then turn it off once I get that info.

I often have it on when I am traveling so when I get off a freeway, I can figure out how to get back on the darn thing. That is often the biggest challenge sometimes, especially towing my boat. Don't want to accidentally go down a dead end street.

I know a while back, they were trying to integrate gas prices for the gas stations along a route. Not sure what progress they have doing that. Right now I use the Gas Buddy app on my iphone and then have it switch over to the GPS on it to find the station.

4 good uses for me are:

1. ETA, usually can calculate within minutes

2. locating upcoming intersections in extremely heavy fog.

3. locate streets, that have missing (stolen for scrap) or unreadable street signs.

4. In downtown major cities, locate routes to get back on interstates (missing street signs)

Had one, used its 'locate' function to find somewhere close by to eat.
Sure, this restaurant is 6 miles away....

....proceeded on a rabbit chase through three different residential neighborhoods, to a dead-end cul de sac....

......'you have reached your destination'. :mad-new:

What brand? I have two brands, one will often do that the other has never led me astray as long as I keep it updated.

Re: More GPS headaches

I just did sales calls in three major metropolitan Midwest cities. My first time in all three. No maps only my smart phone based, turn by turn GPS app. Averaged six call each day. Never once misdirected or led astray. Was I directed via the shortest or fastest rout? I have no idea as I'd never been to any of the cities before. I was given three route choices with every destination, I always opted the shortest mileage wise. Even used it to find restaurants, gas stations, hotels and eventually my way back to the airport I flew into.
