Re: More horsepower, what can I get away with?

I am checking into the legalities of whether it is in fact illegal in Canada to overpower my boat.
I will also let the insurance company know what the descriptors are, as well as top speed (yes they ask that) of the new engine package.

I will post the results, and let you know the performance difference with the new engine.
I will also post what the law states, and what the insurance company states.

No sense in screwing around, and I will let you know how my transom likes the new power set up.

Sounds like a sensible plain to me.

Please let us all know what you find out for Canada.
Last insurance application I filled out for our boat asked max rated HP for the outfit and also what HP was on it.
I dont think the answers 110 hp and 140 hp will go down to well in your case.

I'm not totally freaked at the folks with 10 to 20 percent extra hp on the transom. Its the idiots that are 50, 75, 100, etc. percent over who drive me nuts. With them, its not just the "way overboard" (pun intended) hp ratings, its that the very same mentality that demands such big engines, results in the lack of judgement that causes them to use that hp.

That said, we also have a reminder system around here of just what unwise boating can result in .... they are crosses on the edge of the bayou, just like the ones that have cropped on the sides or roadways all over the place.

So if you have a hull that is rated for 150hp built in 1980 (when crossflows were the only thing around) and you have a 140 crossflow on it and you change to a 150 looper, are you still legal? The 150 looper will have loads more power than the crossflow???

I was curious about the same thing. Or if you have a 1990's hull rated for 120hp, can you drop a 1980 140hp on it.

And I'm not doing either but I am curious how the hp ratings change impacts this.

Just fyi I am still looking into this.
The regulations in the Canada Shipping Act mention it, but there is no "penalty section" that can be found as of yet.
The referenced source being used a law enforcement marine unit....
Hold tight for more info! :D

if your motor and boat are matched thats it keep it that way you can make more hp with your motor and for insurance issuse your safe. Look at your heads carbs prop change jack plate what ever you can do a lot to gain speed. Add rpms and you can get a few extra mph but you will wear the engine out faster don't exceed your max hp if you do you can't insure your boat.
