I doubt that the lever is a "spark advance." Its probably a "warm up lever" and it shouldn't make a bit of difference in regard to top speed. If it does, I'd hazard a guess that there is something wrong with your remote control and/or throttle cable.

In good shape, that old Larson. Used to own one at one time that was a tri-hull. It was very waterlogged and needed much more HP and drank the gas. I think you should be able to get 25mph out of that setup running properly. No to the carb change though.

Again, I don't have the manual so I'm not certain if it is 'spark advance'. I'm just going on what the neighbor told me. I just know that before I raised the lever up to start in neutral, the motor just started slowly and sputtered until it warmed up. Once in the water we were looking at 9-10 mph with 2 passengers.

What puzzels me is that sometimes it does not seem to give that extra boast and rpms and speed. So I turn it off and repeat the procedure.
When that level is pushed up you can see the whole unit under the flywheel move forward about 1/2 to 1" and then the rpm's rev like crazy until the lever is locked back down in place. Maybe this is not enough or maybe it is sticking sometimes and pulls the unit back when returning it to it's resting place. I'll be at the big lake Monday for 3 days but don't know if it will be calm enough to get the boat in. I will take some detailed pics though for when I return.

This should also be moving when throttle is advanced with the control, it advances the timing.
