I have a 77 evinrude 35hp, which I just found this morning had a cracked lower unit. I went and got a used one off of someone (parts motor), and you could see where it has a new waterpump housing, etc.. After struggling to mount up the new lower unit, I tested the motor.. Took a couple seconds to pee water, but did.. I would say the water does not come out quite as strong as my old lower, but definitley pee's water.. I thought more water came out the two back exhaust holes, but I could be paranoid... With a impeller, is it all or nothing? I ran the motor, about 5 minutes, maybe longer, ran ok. I need to get the boat out to the lake asap, to test the gears in the lower unit under load, to make sure they are ok, so I can return it if not.. As long as I make sure I have a good steady stream, I should be ok right?

The tell-tale is and indicator of the water pump working, not circulation through the engine. With the engine running on the hose do not expect much water out of the exhaust ports, most of the water will come out of the center of the prop. When you put the boat in the water and the exhaust housing fills with water you will see an increase in the amount of water coming out of the exhaust ports.

You should be fine for a test run. If it all checks out then replace the impeller at your convenience. I just replaced the impeller in a new to me 40 HP. The old one worked fine. I noticed a marked improvement in the amount of water at the pee hole with the new one though. Best of luck. Rick.
