the data plate is corroded but it does say serial 3232 and above a model number that is to the effect of 85_x__ i think it looks like 85(4 or 9)x2(b,3,or 8) at the end, im pretty sure its 87-89 cuz it has tilt and 1 piece lower unit, however not sure exact yr

With the information you have supplied in other threads I would suggest that Frank Acampora information is pretty much on the money.

That being said, the number AFTER the 'X' is the tell for year model, you have it as a '2'. That would make it a 1982 model. Me thinks it is not a 2.

I took the advise of the regulars here, and called Mecury. Left msg and a woman called my back next day and was VERY helpful. I ID'd my 1994 150 and got some other info also. Good resource. Good luck.

So if mine were a 7 behind the x, would that mean that mine is an 87? Thanks.

Blazin',

Click on this link (or paste it into your HTTP line) and take a look at the 85hp range. You will see that the first NUMBER after the letter coincides with the year. If the number is 2, the year is 1982. If the number is 7, the year is 1987.
