Re: More jobs lost

Guess its the same story throughout the world...
We have the same arguments down here.
Personally, I have always had a 'Plan B' , and I go over that Plan B as often as I go over the mechanics of my business.
If my buyer stops buying from me, I would need 6-8 weeks before I could produce another product for sale. I make very very sure I have a 'cash float' in my bank to tied me over that period, plus a bit more.
Disaster may never come my way, then again it may come tomorrow.
Never heard the term staying ahead of the curve , but it sums things up perfectly.
I'm with you JB, but that dosn't mean I don't feel for the parents.
As for blaming the Politicians....it has nothing to do with them. Just remember, next time you buy something made in China or some foreign land, just repeat after me, another American job gone, because you are the one creating the problem.
Cheers
Phillip

Re: More jobs lost

I have a plan B. It's called retirement. We have the resources to retire at any time. We're just being greedy honkies trying to accumulate even more wealth.

I guess that makes us better than all those stupid lazy Americans who need to worry about keeping their jobs. Suckers!

I was not a "school teacher", TXS.

I was a technician, engineer, manager, Training and Management Consultant, Technical College Instructor/Administrator and Dean of Education. I taught at least part time during all of my careers, including the last 3 years in the Navy.

And I was very young during the depression but I remember well when my Dad's business went under and both of my parents worked at whatever was available or not at all. I remember when having meat. . .any kind of meat. . .on the table was a special occasion.

Too many people roll up into a ball and whine "woe is me"! Then they say that they will not accept any job that pays less than they were making. Losers all!
It's funny how you upgrade yourself, accept less pay to start but end up making twice as much as you did before. It only takes a little effort to break away from the victim syndrome.

JB RULES!!

How much technology is involved in the production of your household appliances?

DD, The high cost of plastics is due to the high prices of crude oil.

BTW, our foreign competitors pay the same price for crude oil, but their labor costs are lower.

Saw a Hula-Popper on the shelf at Wal-mart. It was 2 bucks (down from 6.50). I looked the package over and saw MADE IN CHINA. It is still on the shelf. :)

Got to agree with JB Phd., the govt cannot and should not dictate how North Americans and Private companies spend or don't spend their money.

That's a pretty broad statement.

What if they want to spend their money sending supplies to the enemy? The gov't still can't do anything? ;)

Like it or not, those are the facts. We still seem to buy the stuff though. As I said, look in the mirror.

Our government has done almost everything possible to stifle: inginuity, creativeness and manufacturing by passing insane laws (mostly EPA). All pushed throiugh by small (in the scope of things) environmental and socialist groups.

We all biotch, yet WE don't vote.

The EPA needs to be reigned in. We are the cleanest country on the planet. However, we have NO problem polluting our planet by buying third world products where environmental laws are non existant. As an example: Recycled batteries from Mexico. They dump out the the acid into storm drains, or the ground, and charge and recaharge batteries until they get a serviceable one. I've seen it. And we're the bad guys-environmentally?

WE (USA) are not the environmental monster that MANY would like you to believe.

I just love "Limousine Liberals" and "Gulfstream Environmentalists".

Re: More jobs lost

TXS said, "You got to be a total idiot not to see that our economy is headed to the bottom if not already there."

Young fella, you obviously have no idea what "the bottom" looks like or where it is.

My housekeeper had visitors from Nigeria recently. Mother and sister of one of Charles Neilsen's crewmates, "Shaka". They had never SEEN indoor plumbing, electric range, air conditioner, home freezer. In their village they have a community TV and cold storage unit. They are very happy people and soooo proud of Shaka, the USAF Special Ops warrior.

Reminds me of some of my rural NC neighbors during the depression. Came to school barefoot in the winter. . .the whole bit. I remember Julian Covington wept with joy when I gave him my brothers outgrown boots.

Who do I pity? Those who don't see the blessings all around them in their everyday lives and the opportunities waiting to be taken up.

Re: More jobs lost

Sorry to hear DD. My mom lost her job of 23yrs because they downsized and moved jobs overseas......had to get rid of people with seniority to save $$$. Luckily for her she had gone back to school on their dime. This was a few years ago, she ended up having to take a job at a retail store......but she still is constantly looking for a job that fits her qualifications.

Luckily my dad still has his factory job. Hes a few months away from retirement.

Sorry to hear about your mom, sounds like it may have been a good thing happen to your dad.

Plastic is a worldwide commodity linked to the price of crude oil.

The days of lifelong employment are over. If you arent looking for a job or planning on being fired tommorow, you are way behind.

Ken

Re: More jobs lost

JB I Totalily agree you with you on your point of "the Bottom". I am only 25 years old and I havent seen much in my life I understand that. My wife will graduated from nursing school this friday and im very proud of her. But this is our take on the bottom. She just a few weeks ago got back from Belize. For her senior project She and 15 of her class mates went to a few villages in Belize. 3 1/2 weeks of total 3 world country. No indoor plumbing, No air conditioning, and also NO GLOVES IN THE HOSPITALS (Even During Surgery)... Some of the villagers have never seen white people before in there lives. 1 little old lady came up to my wife and asked her how she can even see in the sun... because her eyes are so blue. My wife has made some true friends with alot of these people and it has truely Changed our lives for the better.

DD Im very sorry to hear about what has happened to your parents. But we all need to Grow and Addapt. I wish the best of luck to them in what ever they do.

Re: More jobs lost

DD yep it bites when ya get "reorganized or downsized" especially when the current laws stack labor against the US. by reasons mentioned above.
I always thought I grew up poor until I started going to Ve and my sister started the missionary trips to Hati.
thats when I found we actually were quite rich.
we may not have had Nikes, or gucci's in fact most the stuff I wore as a kid I was the 2nd third or fourth owner, we all had to have at least 3 ragged cars so usually one would run to go get parts from the scrap tard to fix the other.
however, we are not poor.
not by a long shot.
we have domestic problems here in the US, that I agree to.
but its also why I vote and I shout when the people in this and past administrations try to take civil liberties in the name of helping me.
thats how most those folks down south got to where they are since the early 1800's.
cause all had govts that knew what was best and said they would be safe.

I hope to be in on the next Operation Smile in VE. cant do much but I can keep the gensets running and get things done.
that is one thing I learned in the USN.
tha and never take no for an answer and sometimes the only acceptable excuse for failure is, he died on the way.

JB,

I agree. My parents (dad) won't talk about WWII, but he/they will the "depression".

It was BAD beyond MODERN comprehension.

And, we think we have it bad. We're a bunch of spoiled whiners.
