Re: more laws that don't make sense

Why is it commercial industries are always exempted from these stupid laws? Somehow getting paid to be on a boat makes your boat less prone to mishaps?.......

Its simple.... The state considers those people "professionals" who have "experience" and who know how to "handle themselves" on a boat even in dangerous and adverse conditions.

The state considers the rest of us to be morons.

Re: more laws that don't make sense

I hate how the government tries to micro manage our lives. Like the seatbelt law, just another way to make money. I just bought a new truck, and if you take your seatbelt off at any point when the truck is on, it will buzz every 10 seconds until you put it back on. I mean that thing is annoying, it is a really loud buzz for about 5 seconds.

Even if you just have the key turned forward, with the engine off, it wants a seatbelt on. Why can't my truck just let ME decide when to put my belt on.

bowman, you realize you can disable that option. Look in the owners manual under belt minder (Fords name for it) or something similar. There will be a procedure to disable the option. Same for the Auto locking door option..............another factory PITA.

Re: more laws that don't make sense

I'm not going to even think about the seatbelt law, it enrages me to no end. Here in IN there is a new law that require all boat to have a throwable pfd attached to a rope at least 20ft long or 20yd, I can't remember exactly. I was checked for this once and I haven't heard of it. I was in my boat alone, so I asked the guy what good does it do if I'm by myself? who's gonna throw it to me? Needless to say, he didn't have an answer except some b.s. He let me get away with it because I didn't know about the new law. While driving to work today I thought about a usable law that should be pass. If you drive like an idiot and you cause a wreck, anyone who gets stuck in the mess have the right to kick your butt.

HAHAHA, good point on the throwable! That is just too funny. All I have is a throwable PSD (personal sinking device).. aka, an anchor. Besides those giant rings, I'm not sure what would be considered a throwable PFD, and those giant rings.. where would you stow it on a small craft?

We carry 2 throwable "seat chushions" that have 2 straps on opposite ends. They also get used when anchored out for a seat in the water.

I can understand the rope requirement, but don't agree with it. It can get tangled too easily, hard too throw (unless you're a calf roper), and making it close to useless.

It does me too. However, I understand the logic---if someone gets in a wreck and gets horribly injured because of an accident and someone else is at fault, then the at-fault person would have to pay out the ying-yang vs. possibly very little if the person was uninjured because they were wearing their seatbelt. Better for everyone in the long run.
What erks me is that all these laws that legislators "smarter than the average American" make, always have good intentions. However, we are losing our freedom daily with all these good intentions. How many people do you pass up daily that you would have helped because of liability crap instigated by trial lawyers and made law my lawyers-turned-politicians?
How is it that people can sky-dive, ride motorcycles, etc.-----but I'm forced to wear a lifejacket while running my '57 18hp tiller motor? I don't like BIG BROTHER peering over my shoulder all the time. BTW, I like riding motorcycles, too---but don't now that I have a family. My choice--I didn't need a law to tell me I MUST. You can't legislate stupidity out of idiots, myself included.
I'd better stop before I get myself in trouble,:D

My guess is that they aren't exempted from regulation and that most of the issues are covered by OSHA rules. For example, 29 CFR 1926 has provisions in regard to CG approved PFDs in a commercial environment.

Re: more laws that don't make sense

i too hate to be told to wear a seat belt.....especially when motorcyclists dont have to wear helmets.

now on the water......if you are by yourself--have the sense to wear one..........but it shouldnt be mandatory....its your life.

and what jbj said about lawyers becoming politicians.......well imo thats what is wrong with our country..and judicial system..............everyone hates lawyers--------why do we put them in charge of our country?!

i hate politics.........so im like jbj im gonna have to stop now before i get into trouble.

I disabled the auto door lock on my 2004 F-150. I couldn't stand that auto lock.

Thanks for the heads up on the seatbelt warning. That darn thing will go off when I'm backing down the ramp launching my boat and I don't wear my seat belt while launching!!!

Guess I'll have to see how to disable the seat belt alarm now.

Re: more laws that don't make sense

Lawyers or not, our state senators, U.S. Congressmen, U.S. Senators, etc. are referred to as "lawmakers." For us to think that they are going to do anything other than look for laws to revise or create, is foolish. That is why I wish they were forced to work part time, and its why I suscribe to the "don't do stupid stuff so these guys won't think up more laws," theory of life.

Shall we start a pool on how long it will be, before some lawmaker throws a bill up that has something to do with the football player tragedy?

Jay, U R probably right. I see ball players before house committees being grilled. Seems like the procession of the way things work.

When elected...;)...I will mandate a quota system which repeals laws. They wanna enact one...gotta repeal one (or two). ( i got 3 votes for governor last go 'round.)

A seat cushion is a throwable PFD

Re: more laws that don't make sense

...and is mandatory.

in oklahoma its only mandatory on boats over 16'.......and children 12 and under has to wear pfd at all times.........everyone else is uspposed to have one in reach----not in a compartment--it specifically states this.

as far as these "lawmakers"go------i think we should get to vote on the laws and bills they pass: send every registered voter a copy of the documents (along with prime reasons) and let us decide how we want to live......not some pantie waist telling us how to live. these people lie through their teeth to get elected......so no i dont think they should get to enact laws that govern us-------especially when they are pretty much above the law..........special treatments and all..............and dont even get me started on how they give themselves raises .

if you take a look around at your local authorities you will also see many people taking advantage of our "political system" and "tax dollars": city, county, and state vehicles being used for personal use, favoritism for the "upper class",etc.........

dont read this the wrong way........i love america.............i am just VERY opinionated when it comes to politics and politicians....i think most of them should be in jail .......our laws should work the same for everyone ----- i dont agree with making exceptions because you where a pro athlete, judge, congress man/women, a celebrity, or just plain old fashioned rich.

i like the old saying "dont p**s down my back and tell me its raining"...........
