I posted before about lower unit trouble and replaced seal under water pump.
This was indeed the problem, However previous owner of boat must have tried to replace the seal before me as there is a gouge in the housing that the seal sits in where they must have dug to try to get the seal out. I replaced the seal and it was still leaking from that area under pressure. I am wondering can I put a sealant around the area and put the seal back in to try and stop the leak??

Thanks for any info. This site is great

Once you remove the seal, it is necessary to use a new one. they bend when you remove them. However, try a light coating of Permatex in the bore and on the seal outer diameter. As a stop-gap, try coating the edge of the seal where it contacts the bore with a few light coats of Permatex- can't tell-- It might work!

I know you are trying to save some $$$..but it might be worth just replacing it and illiminating the problem all together..then you know its done right while youre on the water.
