I am floating an 1860AWL Tracker. Its rated for 75hp. I believe this rating is relative for a tiller set-up. Since I have added a console can I run a larger motor... Say 90 hp? Any comment (s) will be appreciated.

I have a 50 hrs Merc now. When I load my boat the Merc can barely plane. Thats going with the wind. I want to be able to get on plane and cruise at a good speed without plowing or straining the engine. With 75 hp I think that I will still need more umph!

I agree you have plenty of horse power, you need to select the right prop.

A 75 will be more power than you might think. I did the same thing this year, went from a 50hp to a 70hp on a 17ft runabout. The 50 would barely plane when the boat was loaded with people etc. With the 70 now it will pop right up out of the water fully loaded no problem. You will also need to choose the right prop to get the most out of your setup.

Thanks for the replies. I had learned that selecting a prop is like selecting the proper drive ratio for your car. That is, you can go for either high speed, or max :rolleyes:torque. So I guess you're telling me that I should decide which I prefer and select a prop that will provide me with a good balance of each...If there is such a thing?

The most important thing is to select a prop that allows your motor to run near the top of the recommended RPM range at WOT. So if your motor's recommended WOT range is 5000 - 5500 then you need a prop that will give you 5400-5600 RPM at WOT.

That being said..if you have a huge difference between uses for the boat i.e. Half the time its just you fishing and the other half it's you and 4 friends then you might need two props. One for speed and one for power. Besides, you should always have a spare prop on board for that day when you hit a rock and lose a blade 10 miles from the dock:)

Cheers

Thanks. I will get a good 75 hrs and some props. I really like the 70 hrs Yam. It weigh 260lb dry. I like the numbers. It seems to be the lightest midrange 4strk available. Otherwise, thanks for all of your help.
