so, i replaced the fuel bulb and fuel hose and put some carb cleaner in the fuel tank yesterday, took it to the ramp and fired up the motor (1978 35hp johnson short shaft)

the motor was NOT happy. it started quickly and easily, but it sounded like it was constantly sputtering, but at high rpms. it was shooting out water in the back, i went back there to feel it and it was real warm. i let it run for another few minutes to see if the high idle and violent shakes of the motor would stop, but it didn't.

i pulled it back out of the water, and took the cover out and felt the plate in the back by the spark plugs and it was hot to the touch.

i'm so pissed off at this POS, why won't it JUST FREAK'N RUN?!!!

any help would be apreciated... i'm still hoping this is something i can fix myself, i don't look foward to paying some jerk $60 an hour to fix it.

Re: more motor problems

this is definetly something you can fix yourself, no matter what it is... its a carbeurated 2 stroke motor, nothing could be more simpler. if you dont have a manual, get one. other than machine shop work, everything else can be done at home.

what are your compression readings.. i bet a decarb would help

kick back, have a brew and take five... and put down that BFH

how is your ign timing? bad timing can make a motor shake violently and run bad

how are your carb(s)? fresh rebuild, cleaned? how are the mixture screws set

there isnt a lot to mess with on a motor like this! its got 2 plugs, a carb, and a ignition box...if these are all in sync then everything should be gravy.

about the overheating.... how is your thermostat?
how is your waterpump? do you run in salt water, if so, try flushing the engine with "salt away"

could you be getting water in a cylinder through a bad head gasket or through a bad water jacket cover gasket? ive had that happen to me on a big twin 50hp johnson....

if you have a manual and you have basic hand tools and are the slightest bit competent, there is no need to take this to a mech.... all he is gonna do is charge you 60 bucks and hour to read the manual and trouble shoot what it says.

maybe somebody else will chime in with more ideas...

email me if you wish, i have manuals and i can help

m ikey

Re: more motor problems

Hey Beermunk, I feel your pain. I have the same motor, same year and it has been giving me fits all fishing season. I have posted on these boards hoping to be able to solve and fix the problem myself. From all I have heard and been able to figure out myself, I am pretty certain that both of our problems are carb related. I have been told my problem is in the low speed idle adjustment. I have tried the recomended tuning proceedure and it runs as bad as ever. I also don't want to take it in to get worked on. But you are lucky in one respect - the repair shop near my house gets $95 / hr.

Hey Beer, its a lot easier for everyone if you keep to just one thread. That way we kinda get a history of your problems and what you have done so far to try to solve them. That said, I think you should tear down the carbs and give them a thorough cleaning.

Hello Beermunk.

The water shooting out the back will be warm. It's shooting out with the exhaust. The place to feel the engine is on the flat place on top of the block just forward of the head. With the motor at idle, you should be able to lay your fingers there forseveral seconds before having to remove them.

Not knowing what kind of maint. you did it's hard to start at any one point.

If it's coughing and sneezing at idle, it would sound like the idle needle is set to lean. Back it out 1/2 turn and see if it helps.

Spark plugs new and set to .030? Good spark? Each spark should jump a 7/16" gap with a hot blue/white spark.

I'm kinda bettin' on the low speed needle being in to far. Let's start there and see what developes.

Keep us posted....thanks.

PS....I'm one of those jerks you would pay to get your engine fixed.... :D

i never said you were a jerk,OBJ. but you do have to admit, and older 2 cylinder 2 cyle outboard motor is extremely basic machine that any fool with a good brain should be able to tackle.... look, i have 9 of them now... so apperantly ANYBODY can do it if they try.....

m ikey

ps. of course, without the help of iboats.com, i would still have 1 motor, and it still wouldnt run! :)
