saw an add in boating magazine for pennzoil's new synthetic blend xlf. for "seasoned" engines.

are they getting a little crazy here? i use to use their standard oil, switched to synthetic blend, now on my first tank of 100% synthetic. is this new oil a better choice? does it really matter? are we all wasting our money? what differences could there be in their blend, 100%, and this new xlf?

What am I missing here JB?. FAQ's are all about forum particulars. I see nothing related to member articles.

All FAQ section articles have and will be credited to the author, Boomyal.

Not sure what you mean by "Forum Particulars".

Can you clarify for me? Thanks. :)

Re: more oils to choose from???

thanks jb, good article from lubedude. i read the info he posted on pennzoil's website. i was just wondering what the members thought of this new oil. seems we all have "seasoned" engines. i think for now i'm going to run a few more tanks of the 100% synthetic to see if i notice anything.

Boomyal

JB is referring to this article written by Lubedude to explain the differences in outboard oil.

web page

This is the link to the "Engine FAQ's (freq. asked questions)" part of this forum, where members address common questions:

web page

I agree with your statement. I do not think this "New" oil has been out long enough for anyone to find it let alone use it for any length of time. Personally I see no need for it, but Im sure there will be people using it as there are with the oils for high mileage cars and trucks. As for you running 100% synthetic, you should notice slightly increased performance, a little quieter running, (it should just sound better) cleaner engine, no spark plug fouling, and very little smoke. Would be really surprised if you ever go back to regular oil.

i have switched to penzoil 100% synthetic for both my mixing at 50:1 and for my lower units and i will never willingly go back to NORMAL oil.... you can actually tell a big difference

7

Bill, (edit)

I have NEVER said that I was anything else, I have ALWAYS said that oil has just been a hobbie of mine for 30+ years and I am just trying to help some people keep there engines running good or to there full potential. Beleive it or not, the school of hard knocks is still the best way to learn. (edit)

I may be missing something here JB. I assumed, by FAQ section, you were refering to the FAQ button, at the top of the page between SEARCH and FAQ.

In that section I only found subjects related to the operation and navigation of this forum.

There's an Engine FAQ forum; it's on the top of the list in 'forum home' or 'iboats Boating Forums'. Or you can click here.

enough fighting gentlemen, this is my post :)

lubedude- i "think" i have noticed less smoke and a little quieter, but i need some more time to judge. i have also recently noticed my rpms seem to stay a bit higher at idle. there is no way the oil can cause this, is there? i'm assuming something changed in the engine, or i just need some standard adjustments.

This is common when using synthetic, it actually lubricates so much better that it causes an increase in the idle. You should be noticing a little better top end RPMs also, maybe 1-200. It will actually get better over time.

Re: more oils to choose from???

wow. so the synthetic is actually making me idle a little higher??? my tach still says 600-800 rpms when just in gear, but i seem to be moving faster. i wonder if i can back it down a bit. it's tough trolling for rock at 4 mph...

Are you saying that you also use the same oil that you premix with in the lower unit

Re: more oils to choose from???

mattttt25,
Synthetic typically has less viscosity and can make an engine run richer when changing from petroleum oil. Tweaking to a leaner mixture or leaner jetting is common in racing when changing to synthetic. Ask a professional racer about it. It is most evident in tiny "weedwacker" sized engines.
