Re: More on the Gimbal Bearing/U joint noise

Hi, just been reading re this issue and I possibly have similar issue? Took boat out yesterday and engine sounds fine in neutral. When I put it in gear it intermittantly makes a rumbling type noise - not vibrating. If I trim it up slightly it stops. Seems to perform as well as usual. If I turn hard left or right if doesn't effect it. It only does it in the water, out of the water it sounds fine. So this only happens if it's in gear in the water. It';s more like a combo of whirring and rumbling noise - no actual vibration. It sounds like an impeller with no water going through it. However my salt water inlet is through the hull, so does not use the pump on the leg. It actually happened the weekend before this one and once I stopped the engine after launching it and started it again it didn't do it again. I'm checking the oil in drive to make sure ther is no water in it later today. Any other suggestions? The gimbal and gearbox leg gearbox's were done about 2 yrs ago and they checked the u-joint and said looked fine. It's an Alpha 1 gen 1 260hp 1989. Any advice / suggestions would be much apprec. Thanks, Andrew

I had completely forgotten this thread.
FWIW, the new u-joints took care of my rumble.
Thanks again for the help and suggestions.

Charles
