so i got this motor for 400 bucks and was told it was is good cond. i get it home and i see that it needs a new stator but more looking and i find that there seems to be some J.B. weld on the exterior of the upper rod housing. the more i look into this motor the more i am skeptical.

My main question is can i run the motor and check it out on a trip b4 making the investment in the new stator.........if the old stator finally quits will it effect other parts of the motor.......

I know i sound cheap but i want to make a good descision. if this motor will be more trouble on the water i don't want to blow 200 on the stator and rectifier.

Does it have spark? Did you check compression?

yeah. I changed the WP and comp tested it and it fired right up and ran for a liltte bit till i choked it out. i pulled the flywheel and i noticed both ends of the stator were cracked and looked to be leaking.

Before I spent a dime more on that motor, I would want to know exactly why the motor has been "jb welded." I've used JB Weld a number of times for minor repairs on various things, but the stuff is not the miracle compound that many try to make it out to be. If you have a cracked crankcase half, JB Weld is not going to be a long term fix for that.

yeah it looks like something more long term....it looks like the motor was rebuilt and somehow a small hole was created in the housing near the starter. so this compound was filled in. it looks to be something that has been there a long time.

There are a number of way's to put a hole in the crankcase, but one you can bet on. Something tried to get out, not in.

yeah, i have some experience with motors for 4 wheeled machines. it seems as if when it was rebuilt or before it was rebuilt the top rod either came apart or the nut wasn't tightened enough. the motor does look like it has had a rough life but like i said it did RUN, My main question is can a bad stator ruin the motor or will it just quit when the stator finally goes.
