Ok guys, this is where I'm at. We have recently had a septic inspector hired in our area. My system is old, probably at least 25 years. I am sure that I need to do work on the system. My system is ok due to age but I would like something better. Because of its age I am exempt from the permits, the system had to have been installed in 89 or before so I am well within the guidelines. What I am wanting to do is put in a new leach field. I have already done the perc tests and will need 220' if using the 4" perforated. I am however going to be using the 8" graveless for the additional protection and will probably go closer to 300'. I have done my homework and understand all of the potential problems and how to avoid them. I plan on renting a ditch witch trencher and hiring a friend or two so I'm good there also. So whats the problem? I have a kinda small tank, somewhere around 500 gallons or so. The regs if it was built today say a 775 is what I would use. I plan on eventually having a contractor install a 1000 gallon double tank, thats a little bit too much for me to do, even with help. I am wondering if there is any problem with keeping my existing tank, which is fine and has no problems, and then the effluent going to the 1000 tank. I realize I would still have to have the 500 pumped at the same rate as I do now but it should keep the leach field cleaner and make the whole thing last longer. Any thoughts or comments?

Re: More septic questions

Just a thought Ken but if you want to use two tanks why not go to the 1000gal first and then the 500. That would save on pumping. IMO though two tanks sounds like double trouble.

Re: More septic questions

I, uh, forgot to metion that reason. The house is still plumbed with red clay tile. All of the connections are good and nothing is broken. I don't really want to pull the toilets and start all over but I will if I have to. I am thinking that I can come out of my existing tank and put a clay to pvc hub on and then the new leachfield. I would leave enough area inbetween the existing tank to have room for the future tank and plumb that section with solidwall pipe.

Do you have room to go from clay to plastic between the existing tank,+ the house ???????

I'd drop the New tank in the Same Hole as the tank is in Now....
Or pipe Around it.......

A properly baffled tank doesn't pass Solids.........
