As mentioned in my lasst post this motor does "appear" to be a Johnson or Evinrude.

However the numbers;
75X704930 (Serial # on Tag)
704930 (# on Plug in Block)
CC9026A (Model # on Tag)
DO NOT MATCH any listed for either Johnson or Evinrude.

IS there a way to cross reference Montgomery Wards numbers with Johnson/Evinrude etc.

Re: More Unknown Manufacturer

Monkey Wards motors were made by Gale in the 1960s. In the 1970s they were Chryslers. Many were Clintons mixed somewhere in there. Gale is sort of a generic Johnnyrude, made in Galesburg in central Illinois. Johnnyrudes were made in Waukegan near Chicago (and other places). Many parts are the same, many are not. That CC9026A looks like a Chrysler number.

This is only the second time I've used the boards so sorry about the use of the Chysler forum. Also
I was under the impression the thing was a Chrysler due to the Model and serial number even though it looks like a Johnson.

Thanks Willy,
I think I already found a source for ID. The title of the book is "The Old Outboard Motor Book" by Peter Hunn. Our library is closed until August something when they move into the new building. If you know anyone who has a copy have them contact me at kvc52@msn.com
Thanks for you help
KVC

Re: More Unknown Manufacturer

Your outboard is a 1957 MW Sea King, 25 hp. Made by Gale, a division of OMC/Evinrude. The 75 in the serial number is the year of manufacture, reversed. Look closer, I bet the CC9026A is actually GG9026A, which matches Hunns book for a 1957 MS Sea King 25 hp. The folks at the Ask A Member board at www.aomci.org can help you find parts and get it going again. It should interchange with Evinrude parts of the same era.

Re: More Unknown Manufacturer

Good info, Tim! I remembered the GG standing for Gale motors. Thought CC might mean Chrysler.

Most of the parts you'd need are genuine Johnnyrude. Magneto, water pump, propellers. Some of the internals are the same, some are different. But that motor probably isn't worth going too deep. Tune-ups, water pumps, etc. Those parts are still widely available, even aftermarket parts. Enjoy that Classic!

Tim & Willy,
Thanks for the info. Guess I need to call my favorite Pirate in Seattle and see about an impeller, and maybe a manual. I guess a 57 Johnson or Evinrude book might work. But then you know what happens when you assume something.
Thanks again
KVC
PS
Is mixture 16:1 like my 18 HP Johnny?

Re: More Unknown Manufacturer

Forgot to add, yes 16:1 will do but you could probably get away with 24:1 with modern TCW3 oil. Lots of folks do on the older OMC's. The buccaneer manual will fit your Sea King. they are identical, just badged differently...maybe with different shaped gas tanks.

Re: More Unknown Manufacturer

Thanks Tim,
This thing has been setting sence 1963 when the previous owner had it at Shasta Lake in Northern Ca. Bob had it on a 12' hydroplane hull he'd built. I was just a kid at the time and the whole rig scared the hell out of me. Anyway I appreciate all your help.
KVC

Re: More Unknown Manufacturer

Yo, KVC.

24:1 is the right mix for that engine, as Tim said. It will also be the right mix for your pre-'64 18 Johnny.

In 1964 OMC specified 24:1 for all pre-'64, OMC made engines, using TC-W rated oils (it was TC-W at that time. TC-W3 is the third spec for water cooled 2 stroke engines).

Your engine is nearly identical to the Johnny RD series of the late 50s. The 1957 version was the RD-19 (manual start) and RDE-19 (electric start). It is likely that the Gale-made engines of 1957 were based on the 1956 RD-18 or 1955 RD-17.

Spark plugs are Champion (only) J4C for high speed operation or J6C for general use (used to be J4J and J6J) gapped at .030". Set points at .020".

Good luck. :)

Re: More Unknown Manufacturer

JB,
This motor I think would be more similar to the RDE-19 as it is electric start. That's what through me when Dad brought the thing home. To me "Sea King" = Chrysler. YET,... WHAT THE HELL!?

Thanks for the info on the mix. I have been running the 18 with 16:1 30 wt, as the decal says. Real great for mesquito abatement. Of-course when you back up you need to pause for a few minutes.

The plugs in this thing are like brand new so no problem there. That .20 gap seems about the same for all the "more experianced" Jonnys and RUdes. Or at least the ones I've fooled with.

This motor probably has a lot of hours on it. Say 100 to 150. Bob bought it new and ran it tha tone summer at Shasta Lake teaching us kids how to H2Oski. Then shelved the thing. Hope Ian has seals, carb parts eic.
Gotta go.
