Our 1997 Stingray carpet has totally frayed apart in the last year, I have replacement on order and was going to just remove everything and replace however-

Flooring is a laminated Fiberglass underneith, (brown looking, unfinished), was thinking of coating it with that Overtons type material and then getting the carpet hemmed/ sewed with snaps. I'm facing critism for turning a small project into something much more. Should I just replace the carpet and move on with life as origionally planned?

Any soft spots in your Deck? Personally, I LIKE your idea. Permanent Carpet is a WATER magnet and helps Damage the deck. Being able to remove the carpet and let things dry out, in my opinion, will add years to the life of your boat.

I only have carpet on my casting decks (bass boat), but on the main floor I ripped out the old carpeting and used some spray on truck bed coating. It has a texture, sprays good, and acts kinda like slip reducing floor coating. The best part is, when it starts to get scuffed up pretty bad, a 6 dollar can will touch it back up.

Sub floor shows no signs of being week. Seems sturdy everywhere.

I see alot of "Snap kits" but havent found one that says it is sutable for carpet, only canvas- Any tips?

I left a message with the shop that did my canvas, see if they can sew an edge around the carpet if I cut it to size.

If I go this route, I'm thinking of just laying it over the present carpet and doing the removal of the old/ sealing of the floor in the fall since I dont want to take the boat out of commission.

OR I just remove the 2 seats and replace the carpet while it is in the dock...

I also like your removable carpet plan. The Overtons coating, Durabak, Kiwi Grip, or even just paint with sand in it are all good deck coating options. At least two members here have gotten snap in carpet kits custom made for them from here http://www.corinthian-marine-carpet.com/boat-carpet-solutions/custom-fit-boat-carpet and the work was absolutely outstanding.

I went with marine vinyl for the main deck in my project boat and I'm thrilled with it. I used carpet for the sides and front and rear decks.
