I was out fishing at Blews Lake last week. I was out with my buddy on his War Eagle. About the middle of the day we headed to a place called Humphries Ridge (a place on the water to get food/ice cream etc)

We had ate and headed back down to the dock. A 'good ole boy' was docked beside us in an old run down pontoon. He asked for a jump but we had no cables. I suggested he use the spare ripcord to get it running. He said he didnt have one so I cut a piece of 1/4" rope and tied a knot on one end. He pulled the engine cover and was going to man the throttle by hand at the engine.

Behind the gate on the rear of the pontoon there is minimal room. I was standing on one side lapping the rope around the flywheel and getting ready to give it a good pull when I noticed the guy sitting on the gastank with a cigarette dangling from his mouth.

Needless to say with no further aduieu, I gladly exited the boat directly across the narrow dock into my buddies War Eagle. I bid him a "good luck" as we pulled away from the dock.

I love to help people in need but I have my limitations. :D

A burning cigarette will not ignite fuel vapors. It's a movie myth. However the lighter used to light that cigarette would do just fine.

Don't think I would want to try that out to see though.

Re: Morons

You are correct on the liquid fuel, but it will do a nice job on the vapor coming out of the tank vent given the temperature (around 81 that day) is enough.

Regardless I was gone. :D

Somebody needs to tell this to the fire marshalls across the country and make sure the gas station remove that "no smoking" sign from the pumps...

Re: Morons

i know from bonfires, if you throw gas on hot coles, with no flame going, it will just sizzle, and the gas will not ignite.

you need a live flame to ignite gas.

but still stupid to smoke near gas

Better safe than sorry. I would have done the same thing too. Hey, at least he was better off then before, since you had already given him some rope.

Re: Morons

yea, the ash could go off and catch some paper on fire, then it will ignite the gas.

I worked at a gas station, and i was the only one who didn't smoke there. Everyone would have to go across the parking lot to smoke. Funny that they were all smokers working around gas all day.

Then why do we use spark plugs:confused: Gas ignites between 500 ?F and 540 ?F. Anything that provides a high enough temperature will ignite gas.

Re: Morons

spark plugs have a spark, there is no spark in cigs.
I don't think the end of a cig is over 500 degrees. and hot coles are not that hot either, i think,

The tiniest spark will ignite gas, but a whole bed of coles will not, unless a flame pops up out of those coles.

Re: Morons

The gas lights in the motor easier becasue it is compressed and mixed with oxygen drawn in from the intake letting it light off with the spark plug. liquid gas takes flame but vapor doesnt take much. Grab a striker from a torch kit fill the cup with gas and dump it out. Then set the striker on the table cup side facing the table side, come back in ten minutes and give it a good squeeze and let me know what happens.

^^^Bingo^^^

It was about 80 degrees that day, which is enough to make some vapor from the gas tank vent. Might not happen but I will let him put his arse on the line (pun intended) and not mine. If im going to set my arse on fire I want it to atleast be my own fault. :D

Re: Morons

Spark created by static electricity is much less than that of a spark plug, BUT it is STILL way over 1500 degrees.

Flash point is the temperature required to ignite a substance, smoldering temps are too cool to ignite gas, HOWEVER, any 'pop' and a resulting 'floating spark' has a greater surface area exposed to air the combustion accelerates, temp rises higher than the flash point of gas and then will ignite fuel vapor.

Re: Morons

i don't think anyone is saying that it is smart to smoke near a gas tank, but some of us are just saying that dropping a cigg into a tank will not explode it, you need a live flame, or spark. Coles alone are not enough.

But still, on't smoke near a tank.

Re: Morons

Let me get this straight........a red hot cigarette cherry or a red hot chunk of charcoal or wood coal will not ignites gas??????? I want a video desmonstration. I can't talk myself into doing the demo part.

Re: Morons

am i the only one who throws gas on bonfires?
Just make sure you throw the gas out, and don't tip it upside down for too long, cuz the flame will try to burn up to the tank.

the safest way to do it would be to pour some gas into a cup, then toss it in from the cup.

Just last week, I poured some on a dead fire, with no flames, but really hot coles, and It sounded like i poured water on it, till i blew the coles, and it ignited as soon as a flame popped out of the coles.

So let me get this straight...

Gasoline is flamable? I thought that new fangled "E-10" Fuel not only prevented clean running marine engines without expensive additives but it also was Fireproof?

Huh, have to stop using it as cologne near the campfire :)
