What he neglected to understand is that it is the gas vapor that burns, not the liquid.

Re: Morons

As for the idiot swimming, why is he the idiot? Why aren't you the idiot for not using a spot light to see what is in the water? Could have easily been a log and not a body. You obviously knew about the rope swing, to me that indicates kids swim in the area. Kind of like driving through a school crossing and calling the kids in the cross walk idiots because they didn't get out of your way. By the way, if you did injure the kid guess who would be in trouble with the law, certainly not he kid!

no, it's more like a guy in dark clothes lying on a railroad track at dusk, and blaming the train that hits him.

Yea, don't swim in the channel at night. 95% of the water is not in the channel, swim over there.

having logs in the channel is out of human control, this situation is in human control, the human swimming in the middle of traffic.
Maybe someone told him to go play in traffic...
lol.

But you do need to watch out too, and he did avoid hitting him, which is all that matters.

Sadly, you are right that he would have been in deep trouble has he hurt the kid by accident. However, that does not make this boater idiot or the kid less of an idiot. Swimming at night where there is boat traffic IS idiotic!!!

Re: Morons

It is just like someone jumping out in traffic, sure it is wrong for them to do that, buy you have to try to avoid hitting them. I think the legal term is "reasonable and pratictal" steps to avoid collision. The driver of the boat just did what a normal person would do, saw someone where they should not be, and swerved to avoid hitting them. But if there was no time to swerve, it would not be the drivers fault.

First off, the officers out there cut the rope swing down about 50 times a year, the kids keep putting it back up.

Its fine to swim, there is plenty of bank on this 5000 acre lake, the middle of a 70 foot deep channel less than half a mile north of the busiest boat ramp is the dumbest place to swim.

Its like having a nice back yard beside the highway, but the kids play in the highway........its just stuipd.

A log? Seriously. I hit a log, I dent my boat. I hit a teen, he dies. Plus, last time I check, logs dont have much control of where they 'swim'.

It was 8:00. Not night but starting to get dark. You can see fine at this time, but with the chop of the water, the boater infront and the MAJORITY of the teens along the bank, the last thing I was going to see easily was a single head in the chopped water.

In most states (including this one) its illegal to swim across channels.

Are you serious? You're comparing a crosswalk (with reflective warning signs and white lines on the road) to someone free swimming across a channel at dusk?? Sheesh. You really need to work on your analogies.

Many places have laws regarding how far you can venture from a shore, dock or boat without using a dive flag or some means to alert boat traffic that you are swimming there because the only part sticking up is your head. Apparently, we need these laws because some people are too stupid to realize this simple concept on their own.

Yea, there was no cross walk across the channel, that channel says "IF i'm a boat, I'm commin right thru here, So don't swim here!"

Kinda like trying to walk across the interstate.

Re: Morons

Here's another one, while snorkeling along within the safe limits of my boat last summer, the sounds of an outboard were getting closer. I look up to see some idiot coming towards my boat a full speed. I don't understand how he couldn't see the 2'x2' diving flag on my boat and the one I tow with me on a linner tube. Stupid people are everywhere.

Im thinkin what kind of idiot, sitting in chop, in the early evening, DEFENCELESS with just his fat head stickin out of the water shoots someone in a boat the rod? Oh the possiblilites! I could go back, knock his lights out and head on to the fishing hole, I could go back and bust an oar over his head.. What could the moron do? Just lay there and bleed?
he is lucky you didnt go back and just pee on his head :)

it is illegal in pretty much every state for someone to swim in a channel. but the channel has to be marked as such with bouys. just because a fishing map says its a channel it isnt unless it is marked as such.

if the local police were actually concerned about the swing they would just cut the branch.

if a boater suspects there are swimmers present it is the boater's responsibility to avoid them regardless of whether the swimmers are in the right or wrong. it works the same as someone jaywalking a street because they are in the street illegally doesnt mean you are allowed to run em over. the circumstance and consequences of unknowingly hitting a swimmer with a boat is the same as hitting a pedestrian with a car the decision being made by a trial by your peers in some cases.

but it always baffels me the amount of high speed boating that occurs in areas that are frequented by swimmers and skiers.

If you had happened to hit the edge of the bucket which had a single drop of gas on it instead of in the center where the big pool is you might well have had a nice little fire on your hands.

Just a suggestion, develop the habit of dropping and stepping on a lit butt instead of flicking it away. It'll save you from feeling awful the first time you accidentally flick a burning cigarette somewhere a little kid might step on it (yep, this happened to me).

Re: Morons

My father back in the 60's scrounged up and assembled a 1930 Model A Ford and made a hot rod out of it. When I was growing up I was always asking questions about it. One of the things I noticed about it was the dash is the gas tank. I remember asking about it and he relayed the story of Henry Ford when the Model A was introduced. There were people there that had some concerns about the safety of this. The story goes Mr. Ford took off the gas cap and dropped a lit match into the tank (it was full) the match was extinguished and the nay-sayers shutup.

I am an EMT now and I have several years experience working on auto's and that's not a scene I would like to try. My father is gone now but I still have the Model A, but that is for another forum.

Re: Morons

A burning cigarette will not ignite fuel vapors. It's a movie myth. However the lighter used to light that cigarette would do just fine.

BIll

I'm sorry, but can you please verify that for me with a demonstration video. You might make U-Tubes Top 100 for 2009.

Re: Morons

Let me get this straight........a red hot cigarette cherry or a red hot chunk of charcoal or wood coal will not ignites gas??????? I want a video desmonstration. I can't talk myself into doing the demo part.

thats correct it wont ignite liquid gasoline. it can however ignite the vapors if the fuel/air mix is just right. that is why there are no smoking signs at gas pumps. 99% of the time nothing will happen but every now and then the exact right mix will be present and the cig will ignite it. most gas fires are caused by smoking or static discharge. a lit cherry falling onto oil soaked or fuel impregnated materials will start a fire then an explosion. fuel/oil soaked carpet or rags have much lower flash points than liquid gas. washing oil/gas soaked rags in a washing machine then placing them in a dryer is far cooler than 1500 degrees and they catch fire in a dryer.

the concrete at most gas stations i have been to has a nice mixture of oil and gas on the ground and most redneck style boats are hardly clean of such things. it doesnt take much heat to ignite such dirty surfaces.
