i have a cheap looking (probably isnt cheap just looks it) plastic single gear/throttle lever thing on my boat.. i think its a morse make same as the steering..

it has a pair of buttons on the top which take take the drive all the way up or all the way down.. trailering...

another pair of button on the top which take the drive part way up or part way down.. trimming..

the lever itself pulls outwards to disengage the gears from the throttle.. starting and such..

but there is another trigger type button on the underside of the top of the handle.. this one dosnt seem to do anything.. is it just redundant in my case or should it do something.. i cant think what.. but i have wondered.. ???

it might be an alternative method of disengaging the throttle from the gears and isnt used on my boat.. praps u should have to press it before u can move the lever out of nuetral.. and its broke.. dunno.. only guessing..

just curious..

trog100

Trog, On mine that trigger stops the handle being accidently pushed into gear just like the protection on the reverse gear on your car. What stops you zooming off if you fell against your throttle, I can see it now £255 from youve been framed

"What stops you zooming off if you fell against your throttle"..

ah well yesss.. he he he.. seems kinda so obvious when someone tells u what it is meant for.. he he he..

i could never really fall against mine accidenatlly and it is quite stiff.. but the lever is perfectly positioned so that when u lean out over the boat say when u are trying to grab and hold the steel ladders in a lock for example.. u push against it with your right leg.. i have done that a couple of times.. luckily the boat goes into reverse and it dont exactly "zoom" but it can get a little hard on the arms trying to hang on till u figure out whats going on.. he he he..

to be honest.. even with the button stopping u moving the lever accidentally idea.. i recon the entire arrangement is a bit dangerous.. the boat can leap forward quite aggressively when u try and move forward.. nothing is sticking but there is so much movement going into gear and then more movement before the throttle comes in that its pure guesswork with no feel at all to it.. and unless u do it very very carefully and get it just right it can be a bit scary.. same with cold starts.. i dont like starting cold engines with bags of revs but with the arrangement on my boat knowing where the throttle is before the engine fires up is totally impossible..

its a river boat very often used in confined spaces locks and stuff.. its not exactly "over" powered (20ft boat merc 3.0L) but i still have nightmares about what would happen if that throttle linkage jammed in the open position..

there is no lanyard strap thingy fitted on the main engine and i have toyed with the idea of installing a big red "off" button on the dash just in case..

somehow i cant help but feel that some boats ought to be fitted with a "deadmans handle" or at least require a button to be pushed kinda like u have on say an electric power tool before the throttle stays open..

anyways guys.. thanks for the info about my "extra" "broke" button..

trog100

What I found with my neutral lock button is that the groove has been warn smooth from previous owners not fully depressing the button. I plan on grinding it back to "squared" groove so that it actually locks. I figure that I just have to be carefull not to over grind - dont want it to be able to engage gears while locked.

-JustMrWill
