For 40 years of all the boating mishaps one could imagine, on the remote marshes of the Eastern Shore, no one to help you , even God b/c he's bent over double laughing. So when you're stuck on a mud flat at falling tide, sunset, mosquitos; the motor that got you four miles out won't restart and you have to paddle against the wind and current; you broke your last shear pin as it's getting dark; a crab pot is wound down to the size of a basketball at 6 am in January and you go at it with pliers soyou can get to the blind before sunrise--those treasured moments make you howl "Anyone who doesn't love this is crazy!"

whether it truly applies to the upcoming weather or not, it comes to mind whenever I see a particularly nice and/or red sunset/rise on the water...

There was a saying on a plaque that hung from my grad dads bay house that said "A boat is a hole in the water where you poor money" Now that he is gone it hangs in my house. RIP

whether it truly applies to the upcoming weather or not, it comes to mind whenever I see a particularly nice and/or red sunset/rise on the water...

Not that my experience is much compared to some, but I truly believe the red sky at night bit. I can't remember when a red sky at night has been a crappy day tomorrow.

The morning part of that - well, I'm not much of a morning person, so I'll just take your word for it.

just after my wife left me i bought a boat to replace her but she did present me with a plaque that reades The two happiest days in the life of a BOATSMAN The day he buys it and the day he sells it. She was a nice lady leading a very lonely life with nobody to boss around and really upset that i am happy. and i bought a second boat, i call them sea hag just to remind me of her. Peter

Remembering the plug while 2 miles out is bad.....

If you get to the launch and the boat not behind the truck, you failed.

When you see a bird STANDING on the water, avoid that area. Jesus is the only one known with the ability to pull that one off.

There are no gas stations in the middle of the innercoastal.

Keys don't float by themselves.​

"Why is there water over the cabin sole?" (asked 30 miles south of key west)
"Whats the tide doing" (asked on a shoal sitting with a 5 foot keel, and dropping tide)
"You don't need to do anything with transmission, just check the motor oil, shes a diesel and drinks oil"(previous owner to us about a 34 cal sloop. bought her. replaced transmission)
"Propane stove-boat liquidation device" (never tried it, but told it does wonders)
"Buy plugs, a lot of them. Put one with the keys to the truck, one on the winch handle, one on the keys to the boat, one in the engine compartment, you will forget to put the plug in and its good to have one readily available" (haven't done it yet but i will and am at least prepared-some guy at the marina)
"taking a shower on a boat is like standing in a closet with a wet dog" (said by an old friend who sailed a lot. he was right)
"When dealing with a trailer put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and swing your hand where you want the trailer to go"(my dad teaching me to tow a trailer when i was 16)
I can go on but those should be a start, we also generally boat on bigger rigs than this website caters to; currently a 40 beneteau sloop, but we do have a variety of small craft

It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off-then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship. There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the ocean with me.

My all time favorite came from my Top on my first tour out on the miserable bathtub of a boat the USS Peleliu.

"Just shut the f**k up and listen"


Came in handy quite a bit over the years.
