1992 200 hp. yamaha.came in last nite and went to back into slip. when trying to shift into reverse, motor stayed in forward and now will not shift out of gear.shift cable moved shift shaft, but no results. i removed shift cable and shifted by hand. shift shaft moved ,but still stuck in forward. any possible answers? i have read that the shaft or connector rots out. does the powerhead have to be pulled to fix this? thanks

Re: moter stuck in forward gear

most likly a bad shift shaft.
me and Parrfive have different views on replacing this part.
my method involves removing the powerhead his does not.
send parrfive a PM and go from there.

Had the same prob with my Suzi about 2 months ago except stuck in reverse. Was a broken pin in the gear box at the foot. Easy fix but you need part breakdown and so forth. Just my thoughts....

I thought P5's process only worked on the 4 bangers not the 6 cylinder.

Yep.. you have the pre '93 Yamaha rusted shift rod. After that year they used a stainless piece. And Doug is right. His procedure only works with the V4's. Looks like the powerhead will have to come off.

I have seen it too. The shaft rusts thin and then fails. Power head is not that bad to remove and replace just takes some time.

Good luck with the procedure if you choose to take it on your self.
