I have a 1969 85 Hp two stroke Johnson V4 moter on a 1970 15 ft. trihull carvelle.
At low speeds the moter runs rough. At high speed the hot light comes on but there seems to be no difference in how the moter runs. When I go from 0 to full throtal I have hesitation. If I move the speed up slowly there is no hesitation. Max speed is 30 mph. Is this the normal high speed for this boat and moter?
As this is me first boat I am unsure if all these conditions are normal for this moter.
Also, do all outboard moters pump water out? I can not see this happening on this moter.

zip - - - - DO NOT RUN THIS ENGINE UNTIL YOU HAVE REPLACED THE WATER PUMP - - Without cooling water circulating from the water pump your engine will overheat to the point that it will freeze up and will only be useful at that point as an anchor. It WILL happen if you continue to run it as is.

Replacing the water pump is not that big a job.

Re: Moter

The first step in that process is to obtain a service manual specific to your engine. If you don't want to buy one, check your local library.

Based upon his question...the best advice we can give him at this point is to seek a reputable dealer for repair- he needs some time to gain more knowledge before digging into a service manual...
and...

Zipper-

If you did not cause significant damage to this engine, you will have dodged a bullet. Research these boards. They are a wealth of information. Let us know how you made out. Sorry to hear what happened...

How many of you winced when you read his message... Kinda like watching a train wreck in slow motion...
