Re: Motor Attempts To Stall

Ok, I put the starter solenoid on and that worked! It is now turning over.
I loosened up the line going to the carb at the carb and gas poured out while trying to start but the carb was dry.
So it looks like their is trash in the Carb. The Mercury dealer said Merc carbs only come with gaskets--no carb kit

Not really, it looks like the needle valve is stuck shut. Or even that filter under the fuel inlet fitting is plugged. Pull it out and look.

Not sure what you mean when you said "The Mercury dealer said Merc carbs only come with gaskets--no carb kit"
When you order a carb, it comes with a base gasket, that's it. No carb kit

Re: Motor Attempts To Stall

Hi and thanks Don, I need step by step instructions on the Carb that a 2 year old can understand haha How do I get to the needle valve and the fuel inlet fitting? Pics?
Oh I mean I went down there to get a Carb kit and he said Merc carbs gaskets were sold seperately and didn't have a kit. I wanted the spring too that went with the inlet filet.
He said you could tell the difference between the Rochester and the Merc because the Rochester had a round cyliner on the bottom of the Carb. Mine has a round cylinder(that goes no where) on the top

The best instructions you are going to get is in the Mercruiser service manual I gave you a link to earlier in this thread. If that isn't enough, I suggest you get someone to rebuild your carb for you.
The EASIEST way to tell the difference between the Mercarb and the Rochester is the idle mixture screws at the base of the carb. The Mercarb has one screw the Rochester has 2 mixture screws. But in 90, Merc was only using the Mercarb.
If you do have a Rochester, then you probably don't have a 1990 engine, they did use them in 89.
Do you have a serial number handy for your engine? That service manual link is for the 90 to 97 engines.

Yea this Carb has 1 idle screw at the bottom
Engine serial : OC 617914 Not listed in the service manual link
Number on top of the carb reads: 1389 9562
I called a mechanic and he said he would be here next week at the earlist.
I would like to learn as much as possible about it.
I looked at the linkage connections and couldn't see any clips that help them on. Must be some kind of tiny metal pin

You do have an 89 engine and drive package. Which means that service manual is not for your engine. You need book #10 Merc pn 90-14693-1
And you do have the Mercarb.

Just My opinion: Daycruiser it sounds like your problem is in the carb.Bad float or stuck needle valve,I bet you have trash in the float bowl..
I went thru the same problems...i removed carb, cleaned it out and put a new top gasket on..problem solved...
Good luck

Re: Motor Attempts To Stall

Thanks for input Gary H NC. I did go out and buy a Manuel that covers 64 thru 92 engines. It shows a Merc Carb. All those little pieces kinda scare me lol. Getting it back together.... I agree with yall that its got about possibly the needle valve and the trash.. I looked at the linkages that should have easy to take off clips. Mine has what looks like little mettle pieces holding them on. If I could get them off then getting the carb off would be no problem. Then I could take it to the mechanic and save some dough. I got some time off tomorrow and will go down there and stare at it again haha
One thing a mechanic could do is tell me if the needle will get stuck again? Or if this carb is just no good and doomed to failure. if it got stuck this time what is to stop if from happening the next trip out?

Re: Motor Attempts To Stall

Update:

Mechanic showed up today. Tested for fire and there was none--hence Emergency shut off switch was bad and bypassed and she fired up.
Carb bowl had plenty of trash. Carb choke was bad.
Carb was taken to shop for cleaning, new gaskets and choke.
The thing that really ticks me off is 3 shops gave the boat back to me in this condition. The last one said he fixed the choke.
The carb has never been right in the since I owned the boat. Hard to start and keep idleing
Thanks to this forum at least I can do some things myself and know what to look for and what questions to ask and who is bsing me
