I have a pair of Merc. 470s and was wondering about replacing them with a pair of 165s. Parts for the 470s are turning to gold as we speak. What I have a question about is whether I would get enough HP from the 165s compared to their extra weight. I'm not a speed freak, but a don't want a barge out there either. What I would really love to do is, install a pair of rotary engines, 400 hp. and hook a couple new Berkeley jets to them, way too much fun there. I am from Palm Bay and go to the Bahamas several times a year so that would be a lot of fun. Any advice will be appreciated.

Re: Motor change

Please specify which 165's. The 3.7Ls came in 165, 170, 470, 185, 190. Am I forgetting any? Then there were 165 inline 6s which started as 160s. Is there a V-6 165? I lose track. So many numbers, so many years, so much alcohol, so many fewer brain cells.

Re: Motor change

Hi Willy, I'll get the next round. The 165s I am talking about are the Straight 6s. Other than that, I'm not sure. Where you from, we might split a 30 pack and settle this problem.

water lover,
I don't have the #s here, But I know the I6 will be heavier than the Alu. block 470... Horsepower is the Same, with little chance to increase it....
If I'm not mistaken, the 470,uses a gear ratio of 1.84/1..... The I6 uses a 1.65/1 ratio..... The 4.3l V-6 also uses the 1.84, Although I'm running a 1.65 with Mine, with No adverse effects.....
If you could shoe-horn a pair 4.3ls into your motorbox, That would be the Best Way to go.....
Another choice would be to Reglass the transom,+ Install a Single V-8.......
You could Also do this,
But your talking Big $$$$$$$$$$.......
Before I did that, I'd do what a friend, who winters in the Islands, did + install a 4cyl. Diesel.... He tells me the difference in the cost of Diesel vs Gas,in the Islands, will More than make up the difference in initial cost......
