OMC motors and controls don't have an emergency kill switch that you puch in an emergency. They have a button that is held pushed in by a plastic clip on a lanyard that you are supposed to attach to yourself while operating the boat. Chances are the black button you have is one of these. The other type of switch on some controls is actually around the key and operates in the same manner. Will your motor start like it is?

That black button is the kill switch. As already mentioned, it should have a lanyard to attach to your life jacket. If you fall overboard, the lanyard gets yanked off the kill switch and the motor stops. If your motor is running without the lanyard, something is wrong with the kill switch.

a prior owner, having lost the lanyard, disconnected it. that's my theory anyway. you can get an aftermarket kill switch, attach one lead to the black/yellow kill wire and the other to a ground wire.
