1964, OMC 9.5 HP Seahorse. Cranks well, runs great in neutral. But when I put it into gear it doesn't want to "push" the boat. On Thursday it would push at about 1/3 throttle then it felt like it was back in neutral or cavitating. On Sat. it wouldn't even give me the 1/3 throttle before it felt like it was in N instead of drive. Someone has mentioned to me the bushing in the prop. Can you guys help me out on this problem and what would you suggest? Thanks in advance!!!

Sandy

I don't know what the technical term is, but the rubber inside the prop has more than likely broke or is just about broke causing the motor to rev up, but the prop not turning to the rpm of motor.
You can take the prop and have a new rubber piece put in it.

Hi,Sandy. What Spinner Bait Nut is talking about is called the hub of the prop. It is a rubber donut that is pressed into the prop's center, that the splined prop shaft turns. these act like a weak link in a chain, and are designed to slip, or "spin-out" as they say. It's hard to tell sometimes that there is anything at all wrong with the prop, but take the prop off, and take it to a prop shop. There is usually one in any town near water,or many machine shops can help.
I don't really remember, but I believe your engine would have an actual "shear pin". This is a small soft steel, nail-like pin that goes thru the prop shaft and prop's hub.If you hit something,it breaks..On purpose. It the same job as the hub spinning out ,only it shears into three pieces. When this pin shears, you're done until it is replaced. Most folkscarry a spare pin or two, or a spare prop, and the tools required to change it out. That way,you can get right back in the saddle.

Of course, there may also be an internal problem in the lower unit's gear case. But these twpo items generally fail, protecting the gear train.

I think it is the hub to, bring the boat out of the water take the spark plug covers out and put it in forward then try spinning the propellor with your hands if you can spin it and the flywheel does not spin then the prop hub needs to be replaced.
