motor cutting off

2000 ? force 90 hp outboard when in neutral after motor has been warmed up it goes into gear great but when wanting to give it throttle it cuts off,starts back up when choke has been engauged and give it some gas then come back to idle put it into gear and runs great and the cycle repeats itself after taking it out of gear. any sugestions as what may be the problem here will appreciated thanks.

Have you cleaned the carbs recently? How about the fuel tank? If not, these are the areas to check first, assuming you have fresh fuel in the boat.

yes the carbs have been cleaned and tank as well plus brand new fresh gas high test at that

When the engine cuts out, is the primer ball soft? What is the idle rpm in neutral? How old are your plugs?

Are you certain the carbs are not set too lean on the low speed needles? Don't know about later Force after Merc changed them but earlier ones would do just what you are stating if the needles were too lean. You would have a great, smooth, idle and they would cut out on acceleration. Get a manual and find out correct setting. Or, try richening 1/8 turn at a time until you get another 1/2 to 3/4 turn out abd see if that solves the problem.


BTW: If you are running that lean and do manage to get the engine past the point where it dies, you are very likely to melt a piston or two.

On other posts people said you have to quickly shift into gear to avoid stalling.

You may be misinterpreting what they are saying. The reason that you shift forcefully into gear, rather than gentley sliding into gear, is to prevent wear on your lower gears. This has nothing to do with your idle speed.

As Frank and I have mentioned, your problem is most likely fuel related. You need to start at the tank and work up to eliminate possibilities.

You can't do it helter skelter either. Troubleshooting must be methodical if you are ever going to get to the root of the problem.

BTW, do you have a manual for the engine?
