Motor died today, 2000 Mercury 150Hp Optimax

Hi Guys,

My motor died today on the water and was hoping with some information someone might help me trouble shoot my issue.

Running WOT, motor started to loose power then died. Put shifter into neutral and tried starting wouldn't start and put major strain on battery. The shifter wont go into forward but it will go into reverse.

My thoughts are its my lower unit.

Something is trying to lock up...pull the oil fill screw and inspect form metal and shiny gear oil.

Drained the oil and it a saw what I think is very fine metal particals were on the surface, but when I ran a magnet nothing was on the magnet. I also have it in neutral and the prop spins without any noise.

Remove lower unit and see if motor turns freely.

First Thanks for the help guys

Before dropping the lower unit I was able to get the shifter into forward and reverse which was odd because after it died on the water it wouldn't go into forward.


Dropped lower unit and I started the motor for just a few seconds and heard a squeeling noise. Im afraid I have a major issue.

Any ideas what my next step might be ?

Check the compressor / belt on this motor.------Check compression.
