hi
i have a 1976 johnson 70 hp
i rebuilt the carbs,
the compression is good
the problem i'm having is when you start the motor and put it in gear it dies unless you rev it up first.
it seems to be using a lot of gas compared to what it used to use.
when i first start it and get it in gear it wont run WOT it spits and sputters.
and the eventually it will run wide open.
but this takes about 5 to 10 minutes before it gets going.
any ideas would be helpfull
thanks
Don

Re: motor dies on take off

Wow! I've just read exactly the same problem on someone elses post so I'll tell the same to you.

Our motors were serviced end of season, carb rebuild and stuff too. It would idle low and bog down when you put throttle on and...exactly the same as you...we were using a hell of a lot more petrol (I even posted on here about that!). My motor was only a 30 so i don't know whether it'll work on a 70 but rise the revs very gradually and I found the motor would start behaving as normal which sounds exactly the same as you! Don't worry, my motor's stopped having the problem all together and we've done nothing to it. Look at it like running in a car.

Someone will be along with a better answer soon I'm sure.

Good Luck

Did you do a link and synch after re-installing the carbs? Your timing may be off.
