Im new to boats and so is my buddy. well anyway he just bought a 23 foot something and its got a mercruiser 3.0 alpha one. Well first off we drained all the gas and filled it up with new fuel and replaced the battery and then started it in the driveway with the ear muffs it took a min or two to get started but with a little throttle in neutral we got it going and it seemed to run good with a little throttle and it did idle but it was a little rough. Anyway we decided to take it to the lake on the 3rd we didnt make it out of the dock. the problem we were having once we got it running after a min or two was that as soon as we came out of neutral and went to go forward or reverse the motor stalled right out nothing we could do to get it to move we tried and tried prolly 40 times. what would anyone think the problem could be???? Tune up???? Plugs, wires , rotor, and a cap????also i pulled the air cleaner off and then we started the motor i couldnt see fuel dumping into the one barrel on the two barrel carb not saying i could see a good amount of fuel into the other side either . should i def be able to see fuel dumping down the barrels???? Any help would be great thanks.

evidently it wasnt tested on the muffs.Did he check/change the drive oil.Lubricate everything. Could be corrosion in the drive shift assembly or a frozen shift cable. post a engine serial number for a link to the manual.
