I am all new to this. I bought a 1989 150 HP Force and it died on me right at the dock. After getting anoither battery, it started and off i went to my fishing spot. After awhile, I tried to strat it again and it sputtered, but started. When placed in gera, it dies. So, I started it and fast slipped it into gera and went off. It eventually died again and i had to have a tow. Got it home, it statred. I changed the gas and plugs but it still dies when placed into gear. Where should i strat? Any hints?

You didn't make any mention of your idle speed or how smooth it was or was not. What you're experiencing is EXACTLY what I went through right before my Force 150 died. Check for vacuum leaks and do a compression test in all 5 cylinders. You may find that you've lost or are losing a cylinder.

It could also be something simpler. THese guys are real fussy about idle/speed idle/misture and timing.

Mine went from dying when put into gear to great - by just setting the idle mixture correctly.

Find the rich roll off and the lean roll off and set half way between the two - do the same for each carb - then average all the settings. On mine it's 3/4 out from seated.

Also Idle speed is controlled by a screw that advances the towershaft - and advances the timing - without opening the carbs. This may be set too low.

Mixture really does make a huge difference on these engines - or you could be something more serious - but start simple.

good luck
jim :)
