My fiance and I are looking into buying our first boat. We have found a '78 Glastron Sea Rider in excellent condition except this. We found it on Craigslist and haven't taken it out ourselves yet, this is just what the seller is telling me. The motor (Mercruiser 848) starts and runs fine in neutral, then put it in gear and the prop starts to spin, then engine dies. Any idea what it could be? We certainly don't want to buy a boat then have to drop thousands of dollars to get it running. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in Advance...

I'm sorry I cannot answer your question about the boat but just wanted to comment that there are plenty of good used boats out there that DO run.

Is it an inboard engine? My guess is the accelerator pump on the carb.

Okay...does it conk out in forward and reverse? I have a mercruiser 200hp w/ a alpha one drive on it.Starting mine up this year, ran great in neutral, conked out forward/reverse.Took the outdrive off too find that the shift lever was very tight and hard to move..Lubed her up, put the drive back on and start her up..works great now...When i did have the problem, it would go into gear foir very little and then conk out..sounds like the same problem too me..Im sure a marina wouldn't charge you that much, always better to do stuff yourself anyways. Tell me what you do, i can help you out.. I also agree with 180fisherman's post.. How much is it? Floors hard/soft? needs alot of work? anything else???

I see guys have this problem all the time, with older boats. Usually the idle screw has just slipped a little bit, so the boat is idling too low. You can fix the problem by just turning the idle screw to raise the idle a little bit. The reason you have to do this is on old carbureted boats the spring that is supposed to hold the idle screw still gets old and looses it's "springiness," so it allows the idle screw to turn out, due to engine vibration. When the idle screw turns out, the idle lowers, so when you try to engage the prop, the engine just isn't running fast enouth to overcome the resistance of the prop. Just turn the screw in a little bit while the engine is running to raise the idle a bit. That will probably fix your problem.

If that doesn't fix it, you may have a dirty carb. Off-idle performance is usually the first place you'll notice problems when you have a dirty carb. Try running some carb cleaner through it, and see what happens.

Finally, if neither of the first two things fix it, the engine is probably just worn out. The low compression of a worn out engine is most noticeable at idle, since that's when the gasses in the cylinders have the most time to blow-by the pistons and piston rings into your crankcase.

Make sure you try raising the idle a bit before you give up! It only takes about a min, and I'm pretty sure it will fix your problem. Good luck!
