Re: Motor dies when put in gear/low RPM

I just dont know whats going on with this motor. what about the oil leak from prop housing?
Also, what should my top speed be with this motor?

The oil leak can only be 1 of 2 things. If it's blue/green its 2stroke oil. If it's brown it's gear oil. Gear oil coming out the housing through the prop is either leaking from the prop shaft seal, the bearing housing o-rings, or the seal beneath the water pump base leaking down through the exhaust. If it's 2stroke oil it would be a small residue amount only.

As far as top speed goes, there are too many variables with prop, weight, etc....but I would think you'd be cruising around the 30mph range

Thanks.
I took the boat to a shop to have the gear oil changed few months ago when i first got the boat..
I came back to them and had them check it for leaks after the first time I had it out as i had a leak by the prop. they pressure tested it over night and they said it was fine.
the oil leaking out is brownish black.
I thought the 2 stroke oil residue would be bluish as well.
Just went outside and took off the vent plug screw and saw not oil in there at all.
I think its leaking from the water pump seal. is that something i can do with normal tools and manual or should i not attemp it.

the best i can get top speed on this motor is 15mph (per fish finder)
I know its bad beacuse the boat doesnt weigh that much.
maybe ill have to take it to the shop and see if they can find the problem.

Bump.
Had the carbs rebuild and boat ran fine. Had her out about 3 times.
It has been sitting for about a 6 weeks.
Wanted to take her out so I started her up just to make sure.
it sputters really bad at first. when it warms up, sounds little better but when I turn the choke down. it wont stay idle.
Had to open the choke to restart even when warm.
here is a video. thanks.

I ended up getting a new gas tank and all new fuel. the old tank was metal and needed to go anyways. plus with the rain we had in cali I dont know if water seaped in or not. I don't know.
But the motor still runs like ****. Also I noticed that the water that was pooled up has a huge slick on it.....continuesly as it runs off into the drain. is the motor not bruning up all the fuel?

Wow.... that video sure shows a lot of blue smoke which looks to me to be really rich mixture of fuel to air ratio. Extra fuel running in from the top carb should not be happening and would certainly cause this at idle ; and at high speed it would probably burn off that extra fuel because so much air is getting drawn in . I think I would get a different service tech to clean and adjust the carbs. Perhaps the mechanic missed a gasket or "O " ring in the linkage when you had them done before. I wouldn`t muck around with props or trolling plates until I got the engine running situation sorted out. good luck !!

thanks Fisherguy. Only thing is there is no O ring in the linkage. If you look at post 7 to the link it shows the schamtic and there is no O ring there. pretty much have to get new carbs.....yeah, NO thank you. then Ill go and get a 4 stroke as there are some lakes in Cali I want to go fishing at, but cant since they dont allow 2 strokes.
back on motor. I have the guy coming out to my house tomorrow moring to take a look.
