Motor doesn't reach top speed, bad hole shot

My '84 Evinrude 235 has a poor hole shot and doesn't reach very high RPM. It is on a 17' tri-hull and has a 14.5x23 ss prop.

It helps the hole shot if everyone is up front, or out of the boat. It seems to reach a top RPM of 5000 and a top speed of 55mph irregarless of load. The specifications of the motor are as follows: 4750-5750 recomended engine speed, max power at 5250.

The boat has rebuilt carbs, a new power pack, and the VRO has been disabled. The mechanic told me not to plug the oil inlet on the VRO, i'm gona try plugging it. I don't see how air isn't getting in with the gas.

I also have concerns that the prop is to big (23") or that the lower unit is too low in the water (too much drag). I can trim the motor up quite a bit before it loses bite.

I am told this boat would pull up multiple skiers and go 70mph in its prime, something is wrong.

From the other thread you started --

For long life youll want to set that motor up at 5800. For pulling skiiers you can set it up (unloaded) higher than that.

Yes I'd bet the 23 is a bit much. Regardless of what prop is on there now, at a top rpm of only 5000 the holeshot will be horrible and pulling anything / anybody would be pretty hard.
It'll be a lot less confusing if you stick to one thread.

Thank you for your reply.

The boat has always been in the family, and i have always been told of how much power it used to have. Given that, i thought its more likely the motor than the prop. However, my local mechanic (who is highly recomened to me) has exhausted his efforts, admitting that he hates Evinrude 235s. He has given me the name of a guy half way across the state who loves to work on them, but I'd really like to get it working myself instead of hauling it there. Thats the reason for the second post. (Actually, i have three posts. I watched how many threads get added every day, and realized that the chances of anyone reading my old one was slim to none.)

that boat must fly. I have a 70 on a 18ft trihull, and it pick ups and goes without complaining.
