Can I buy gaskets (head; valve cover; water pump; exhaust and intake manifold; carb; etc) for a 1983 mercruiser 305/5L MCM228 engine from an auto parts store or do I have to go to a marine supply store? Basically is there any difference between marine gaskets and auto gaskets?

You can buy from auto parts stores so long as they specify for your marine engine. As an example the intake manifold gasket for a car has water flow through the intake, where a marine engine does not.

Edit: well guess I got it wrong again  sure could have figured it since mine does.

My bad again, dang that's two in one thread. It's not water it's exhaust transfer through the center, and now that I think of it my rear water channels are blocked of on my 502. Had to repair the intake the last time I had it off due to a slight water leak
