Re: motor has hard time turning over
You say you don't have the controls hooked up..

That would be the first thing I'd investigate with regards to the lack of spark.. also since this is a hydroelectric, even if the shifter wasn't powered by an oil pump in the foot, you wouldn't get it out of gear because your control box is missing.. which includes the 3 power buttons (forward, neutral and reverse) and wiring for them.

Shame your not in WA.. I have my spare evinrude controller sitting out the back.. but there are a ton of these motors around, so you should be able to find one easily.

As for the ignition, its a 72 model, which means you can't even do the car coil conversion.. (no points) if it was an older model you could...

no matter, be very careful what you mess with electically wise.. if you blow the powerpack on that thing, it will cost you. (cost me 350 bucks AUD). First thing I did when I got mine, was to fix all the earth (neg) wires to the motor.. all of them were looking sad.. and a downed earth strap can fry your pack.

Find a replacement controller first.. so your not working in the dark.. any controller from 85+ HP from that time period would be fine.. (even if its a johnson controller).

By good battery, we mean a 550 CCA battery.. I discovered recently that my new 260 CCA model is not good enough to start it more then once or twice. (no good for fishing.) if I was to turn the motor over on this 260 CCA battery while stopping it from starting somehow, it would spin for about 20 seconds max before the battery couldn't turn it at speed anymore..

regards

Franki
