motor head removal, old johnson

im trying to clean up and paint a qd21 1960 johnson seahorse 10hp. i have everything freed up except for one bolt fastening the motor head to the shaft. when i free that bolt, will the motor head just come right off or will i need to do something else......thanks

While I haven't done that motor it should come off.You may have nudge it with the heel of your hand.Sometimes the drive shaft is stuck in the crankshaft.We can discuss solutions if it happens.

Check the leg immediately below the cowling to see if it is a cover that unbolts to expose the exhaust passage. Most motors have another pair of bolts coming up thru this exhaust housing into the motor.

I think there's 7 bolts/nuts on that engine. If you're sure that's the last one, just remove it. The easiest way is to get an old 1/2" open end wrench and grind it down so that the outside dimension is smaller and it will easily take that nut off. Then, as mentioned, just nudge the powerhead and it should come right off. There's nothing else to remove once you have all the nuts/bolts off.
