Hi Everyone!

I just got my first outboard. Got it for free also...so the price was right.

Only Problem is...I don't know what it is!

I think that it is an 8hp and I think it is russian. It says on it..BETEPOK 8 and has some Russian writing on the Serial Tag and says the year 1974.

Anyone know anything about these motors? It looks like it is pretty decent condition (although it doesn't run...not sure why yet...just got it today).

Any information you can give me as to it's orgin, make, places for manuals etc would be greatly appreciated.

Pete

Thanks Frank.

I did the same searches and got the same thing. I actually found a Russian translator and was able to read some of the pages.

Apparently it is Russian Made (and from what the website said reliable). I guess the company was making motors until at least 1993, so I am not sure how easy/hard parts will be to come by.

Thanks for helping out.

Pete

Shortly after the USSR collaps, at lot of these motor popped up in the western world. From different sources to strange outlets. We saw them sold by a fella who trade (very) used trucks. Think he had some connectin over there from re-exporting old vehicles and got a lot of outboards in exchange.

I think somebody got the idea of checking environmental specs for these motors and that was the end of it.

Re: Motor Help...BETEPOK 8???

It's sounds like a COOL motor, but if it's rare enough (and hard enough to run and repair), you might want to just SELL it.

There are plenty of outboard motor collectors out there and a "Russian" ob might be pretty rare. There may be some demand, but you would have to check around.

You might make enough on the sale to at least make a large dent in the price of a newer OB motor.

Who knows though, it could be the Yamaha of Lennigrad, run like a clock and give years of uninterupted service. ;)

Sell it or give it away. The coolness of it being Russian will get old fast when you are trying to start it in the middle of a lake at dusk. 8 or 9 years ago my brother had a Russian 2 stroke motorcycle with a similar name someone traded him for a debt. It was a horrendous piece of machinery. It smoked like crazy, constantly misfired and broke down. No one would work on it twice. One mechanic told him the motor was a bad copy of a World War 2 era BMW bike motor. I guarantee you can get a better outboard project for $50.
