I was hoping to see this one on the forum, but did not. I am a new boater this year with a 14' 5" Scout boat.
So far I have left the plug out. I am glad that I have a float operated bilge pump. I also had read that the cockpit scuppers were "one-way". In reality they have a stainless steel cup that will not let water in if you are moving at a good clip going forward. I thought there was some sort of valve in there that was "one-way", Nope! Launching with the scupper plugs out just scoops up water. But it will drain the water out as soon as I was moving.

My most embarrasing mistake was loading up the boat on the trailer and pulling up the ramp and hearing a loud scrape and bang. I stop, jump out to see I left the O/B in the down postition. Well I scratched up the skeg pretty good but other than that Things are OK.
I'm sure this has happened to others. the other day I saw an I/O on a trailer with a skeg that looked like a question mark. I'm sure the lower unit on any O/B has got to be expensive.
It is also a good idea to bring your fishing rods, if you are planning on fishing! :)

I think most of us have seen that happen once or twice : ). But, what hurts you will only make you stronger. Everyone makes mistakes.

Brian

Re: Motor in down position

Forgot to trim up my old I/O on several occasions   yes, they do make a noise. Never had that problem w/my first boat for some reason, guess because it was an outboard and
I always had to go back and tilt it back by hand.
Got me a 'Toon' now and it sets so high on the trailer, I don't have to worry, No plug to forget
either :D Been there, done that. At least I don't think ummmmmmmm?

Re: Motor in down position

Hehehehe Her's a real good one. last year my friend's I were heading to the launch after work to try out his newly purchased used Larson rig he had a motor \transom support but left it at home. We tore in the parking lot like a batt out of hell and it had a wash out in the gravel righ as you came off the road. well in the hurry of things we just launched the boat and started it. well it did not go any where so i looked at the motor after we trimmed it up. and man there was no prop there. we broke the output shaft clean off at the road there it was in the gravel!!! heheheheeh man that sucked. !!! cost him 2 grand !! but what a barrell of laughs!!!!!
